Rotogravure and Flexographic printing press

Rotogravure and Flexographic printing press

Herbert L. Weiss

Preface of translation into Chinese (400 pages)

Hilson Huang

After get into flexible packaging field for 20 years, I have tried very hard to find a book about gravure and flexographic printing which can be understand easily for  new comers as well as for the people in this industry who want to improve their printing result, to increase their productivity, to know more about how to do the converting after roll to roll printing and to have a handy book for printing press manufacturer to refer as a text book in Chinese. Fortunately in 1989, I found this book from Mr. Herbert Weiss can be very useful for the package printing people in Taiwan.

Getting permission from Mr. Weiss in August 1989, I started the translation of this book. At that time the industry for roll to roll printing is just initiated in TW this keeps me very busy in good business of gravure printing cylinder making equipment and consumables for years so that can’t concentrate on the translation work and in time for publishing.

Translation actually is not a easy job, you have to digest first then express it with local language completely, in order for easy to read from new comers to professional technicians I have to spend a lot of time to modify and beautify for my articles. During having a new factory in West Midlands / England the draft of this book becoming my best weapon to kill time during the long distance fights on air plane flying between Asia and Europe.

This book comparing the history of development for both gravure and flexographic press, type of advantage and disadvantage, design concept for different  applications by machine constructions under: printing unit / drying system / roll stands / tension control / tension and drive system / web control system, it is becoming a guide book helpful for users to make their choice during purchasing.

In addition, Mr. Weiss is also familiar with letterpress / offset / screen / laser + inkjet printing and have described its separately on the first chapter. Despite of develops and improvements of new technology, I still have to be faithful to follow the original meaning from the author, this is on the purpose for readers to understand past technical in order to appreciate for the new technology of modern developments.
